Welcome
Some of you know about a patient who is especially near to my heart. He received a cochlear implant for his deafness a year and a half ago at the late age of 7. The surgeons said that he might not speak for 24 months after surgery because he had used Sign Language for 7 years. Learning to listen to spoken English would be hard work for him, and his prognosis was guarded.
'John' is now using 40-50 words and has started putting them together in phrases.
John's Mom, a single parent of four, sits in with me on every session. She has been his language and listening coach on the many days that I cannot be with him.
'Kat', his Mom is loving, hard working, and determined. She is an aide in an education-related setting, and manages an impressive amount of work for her children. I have loved working with this family, and am thankful for the opportunity to be with such an amazing child.
'Kat' has come into the clinic on recent wintry days wearing the usual flip flops with her coat. She has a growth on the side of her left foot that makes wearing regular shoes painful. When I asked her about their holiday schedule and needs, she mentioned not being able to drive 'John' to therapy for a week this month due to her surgery.
She does not have insurance, and the surgical removal of this growth will cost $3700. She is planning on funding this in payments throughout the next couple of years. 'Kat'' has not asked for any assistance, and likes to take care of things herself. She does so much for her children, and honestly for me in her example of motherhood and dedication.
I do not remember seeing her wear anything but flip flops for as long as I have known her. She feels guilty spending this money on herself rather than her kids. She has put off the surgery for more than a year.
Please join me in contributing any amount, large or small to defray or cover the cost of her procedure. Although her identity is unknown, her need is apparent. Federal privacy laws prevent me from disclosing this patient's name or using identifying photographs. My proposal is this- please consider making a contribution or paypal.
